Abstract

Higher education is an important factor in national development as well as an instrument for encouraging vertical social mobility. Equal access to higher education can open up opportunities for people to improve their social status, but the reality in Indonesia shows that there are still gaps due to socio-economic, geographical and cultural factors. This research aims to analyze the relationship between higher education and social mobility in Indonesia using descriptive qualitative methods based on literature study. The results of the analysis show that higher education plays a significant role in opening up opportunities for social mobility, but its role is strongly influenced by family background and economic conditions. The concepts of Inequality of Educational Opportunity (IEO) and Inequality of Social Opportunity (ISO) from Boudon (1974) are relevant to use to see this phenomenon. This article concludes that higher education is able to increase social mobility only if it is supported by policies of equal access, education subsidies, and improving the quality of higher education.
